Dear Citizen,

As you know, we set a goal to raise $15,000 this week to support BRI's ability to provide technical and scientific briefings on Capitol Hill next month toward a National Mercury Monitoring Network.  We are grateful to those of you who have already responded to our request for assistance.

BRI considers providing scientific and technical information essential to our mission.  Unfortunately, we often use funding we don't have to honor these requests.

Please take a moment to give $10, $25, $50 or more to help us respond to requests from D.C. for our scientific expertise. Here in Maine - where we are vulnerable to mercury deposition from coal-fired power plants in the Midwest - understanding the effectiveness of policy changes on mercury hotspots is critical.  New research by BRI and collaborators, published in the journal BioScience, shows that four known and likely mercury hotspots exist in Maine. Monitoring is currently lacking to determine whether other hotspots exist, identify the source of these hotspots, and assess whether mercury levels are increasing or decreasing in fish and wildlife in these areas.

Thanks again to those of you who have already responded.

Sincerely,
  Patrick with kids
