Adopt-A-Loon

BioDiversity Research Institute bands and monitors Common Loons throughout North America as part of ongoing protection and preservation efforts for this majestic species. By adopting one of these loons from a lake of your choosing, you help support these efforts. Put your affection for loons to work. Adopt a loon for yourself, today, or give one as a gift to someone special. Thank you!

Adopting Your Loon

BRI and its sister organizations have been working for years capturing, banding, and observing Loons. We have information on thousands of individual birds. We will use this database to give you detailed information about the particular Loon you adopt. Each Adopt-A-Loon packet will include:

  • A description of your Loon's personal history (how old it is, its size and weight, what lake it resides on, and how many offspring the Loon has parented);
  • A personalized Adopt-A-Loon Certificate;
  • A fact sheet on Common Loons and how mercury and lead affect loons;
  • A 2006 Loon Appreciation poster: color photography by David C. Olson; and
  • A 8" x 10" color loon photo.

Adopting an Individual Loon
  • $39.50 for standard adoption
  • $30.00 for school classes/students
  • $55.00 for Loons from custom lakes (please call to see if we work on the particular lake you want)

The Adopt-A-Loon Program is sponsored in part by a generous grant from L.L.Bean®.
